Darjeeling wins geographic trademark

The Tea Board has won a landmark victory in its battle to protect Darjeeling as a Geographical Indication for teas.

Darjeeling is one of the most famous tea growing regions in the world, if not -the- most famous. Its teas are reknowned for their flavor and command some of the highest prices on the market.

Yet, in some parts of the world, including France, the tea wasn't marketed as Darjeeling and this well known brand had little identity.

Thus the appearance of "Darjeeling teapots" and "Darjeeling blends" that had nothing to do with Darjeeling, India.

The Tea Board began its pursuit to protect the Darjeeling name as a Geographic Indication (GI) in 2000. Now with the expiration of the appeal period, the GI protection has become law in the US and France.

This is an important victory for tea lovers. Darjeeling produces wonderful teas, and knowing that a tea labelled Darjeeling actually comes from the region is a must. Lest the name Darjeeling go the way of Java or Mocha, well-known coffee growing regions whose names have become synonymous with the drink and have no brand value left.
